WAS NAILED TO THE CROSS.

*BAPTIST: Spurgeon - “The law of God is a divine law, holy, heavenly - perfect. There is not a
commandment too many, there is not one too few, but it is so incomparable that its
perfection is a proof of its divinity.” Vol. 2, Sermon 18.
“First the law of God must be perpetual. There is no abrogation of it, nor amendment of it.
It is not to be toned down or adjusted to our fallen condition; but every one of the Lord’s
righteous judgements abideth forever.”
* Dr.Billy Graham - “The word ‘Law’ is used by the New Testament writers in two senses.
Sometimes it refers to the ceremonial law of the Old Testament, which is concerned about
ritual matters and regulations ... from this law Christians are free indeed. But the New
Testament also speaks of the moral law, (i.e.- The Ten Commandments) which is of a
permanent, unchanging character and is summarised in the Ten Commandments.” *. Press

* Baptist Catechism p.9. “Question 46. Where is the moral law summarily comprehended?
Answer - The moral law is summarily comprehended in the Ten Commandments ... The
preface to the Ten Commandments teaches us that because God is the Lord and our God
and Redeemer, therefore we are bound to keep all His commandments.”
*METHODIST: John Wesley - “The moral law, contained in the Ten Commandments, and
enforced by the prophets, Christ did not take away. It was not the design of His coming to
revoke any part of this. The moral law stands on an entirely different foundation from the
Ceremonial or ritual law. Every part of this law must remain in force upon all mankind,
and in all ages.” Upon our Lord’s Sermon on the mount” Vol. 5:311.
* “I cannot spare the law one moment, no more than I can spare Christ. Seeing I now want it
as much to keep me to Christ, as I ever wanted it to bring me to Him. Indeed each is
continually sending me to the other - the law to Christ and Christ to the law. The love of
God endears the law to me, this is perfect freedom thus to keep the law, and to walk in all

* Doctrinal Standard of Methodism page 190. “Although the law given from God by Moses
as touching Ceremonies and Rites doth not bind Christians; yet notwithstanding, no
Christian whatsoever is free from the commandments which are called Moral.”
*PRESBYTERIAN: “Confession of Faith” ch.19 art.5. “The moral law doth bind forever all, as
well justified persons as other, to the obedience thereof. Neither doth Christ in the gospel
in any way dissolve, but much strengthen this obligation.”
* John Calvin the father of Presbyterianism wrote: - “We must not imagine that coming to
Christ has freed us from the authority of the law, for it is the eternal rule of a devout and
holy life, and must therefore, be as unchangeable as the justice of God.” Commentary on the
harmony of the gospels” vol.1 p.277.
* Albert Barnes Presbyterian scholar wrote, “We learn hence -
1. That ALL the law of God is binding on Christians. James 2:10.
2. That the commands of God should be preached in their proper place by Christian
ministers.
3. That they who pretend that there are any laws of God so small that they need not
obey them, are unworthy of His kingdom.
4. That true piety has respect to all commandments of God and keeps them.” Notes on
the Gospels; comment Matthew 5:19.
* On Matthew 5:18 “The ceremonial laws are such as are pointed to meet certain states of
society or to regulate the religious rite and ceremonies of a people, (e.g. the Israelites).
They can be changed when circumstances are changed and yet the moral law be
untouched.” The ceremonial law had to deal with rites of blood offerings which ceased
when the great ‘Lamb’ Jesus finally offered up His blood on Calvary on behalf of our past
law-breaking. The ceremonial law was “nailed to the Cross” therefore ... Colossians 2:14.
*CONGREGATIONAL: G.Campbell Morgan speaking of the vital necessity of keeping the
Commandments: “It is only when grace enables men to keep the law, that they are free from
it; just as a moral man who lives according to the laws of the country is free from arrest.
God has not set aside His law, but He has found a way by which men can fulfil law, and so
be free from it. (i.e. the forgiveness of past breakages of the law by genuine repentance and
obedience, and accepting His grace) The Ten Commandments (1901) p.23.
*LUTHERAN: Martin Luther - Following the quoting of the Ten Commandments Luther says:
“We should therefore, love and trust in Him, and gladly obey His Commandments.” Schaff.
Vol.3 p.77. Luther’s Small Catechism. (1529).
*CHURCH OF SCOTLAND: Draft Catechism with notes p.51. “In the Scriptures we learn what
the way of life is, which He desires us to follow. In the Ten Commandments God has laid
upon us certain moral demands that must be basic in our conduct. The commandments
reflect the character of God; that is the kind of God He is, so that those who are His
children must live a life that is in harmony with that character. We are, that is, not dealing
merely with a moral law. Behind each commandment is the living God. The second thing
to be noted is that men and nations who defy these commands and follow the ways of
conduct that break them, inevitably, sooner or later end in destruction. The shores of
history, ancient and modern are strewn with such wreckage.”
*CHURCH OF ENGLAND: Articles of Religion p.260. “No Christian is free from the obedience
of the commandments which are called moral.”
* The 39 ARTICLES of Religion of the Church of England (1571) Art.VII “The law given
from God by Moses concerning ceremonies and rites is not binding: no Christian man
whatsoever, is free from the obedience of the commandments which are called moral.” (The
ancient speech used in the original draft is modernized, the meaning unaltered.)
*MOODY: the great American evangelist and revivalist of the last century -
“Weighed and Wanting” pp. 11-16. “The law given at Sinai has lost none of its solemnity.
Time cannot wear out its authority or the fact of its authorship. Men may cavil as much as
they like about other parts of the Bible, but I have never met an honest man that found fault
with the Ten Commandments ... It has been well said that the commandments did not
originate with Moses, nor were they done away with when the Mosaic Law was fulfilled in
Christ. The Commandments of God are as binding today as ever they have been. Jesus
never condemned the law and the prophets, but He did condemn those who did not obey
them … The people must be made to understand that the Ten Commandments are still
binding, and that there is a penalty attached to their violation. We do not want a gospel of
mere sentiment.”

Here are all the precepts of the Old Testament endorsed in the New. We might as well deny that
the sun shines as to deny the binding obligation of the commands of God under the gospel.
